5.0 out of 5 stars Highly accomplished and insightful, 6 Jan 2012
This review is from: Martin Luther King (Paperback)
Without Martin Luther King there would have been no President Obama. Godfrey Hodgson has written an incredibly well balanced and thoughtful biography of this great social campaigner and orator. The book largely follows a chronological approach but unlike other biographies it does not get bogged down in the minutae with the emphasis very much on analysis and objectivity. The result is a relatively concise (230 page), well balanced biography which accurately places its subject in his times and the main forces that swirled around him. Hodgson gives enough background material to enable the reader to get a full understanding of what drove MLK and the vociferous opposition he had to contend with in his struggles. Hogson is extremely fair and does not overlook MLK's weaknesses (infidelity, etc) but rightly points out that on any comparsion with some of his contemporaries (Kennedy, Hoover, etc) he was a more virtuous man. This book is highly recommended to all.

This review is from: Martin Luther King (Paperback)
Godfrey Hodgson's biography of Martin Luther King is fairly short, at a little over 200 pages, and manages to convey a clear sense of King, his personality, practices and beliefs as well as the cultural, religious and political American context, without leaving the reader feeling short-changed or bogged down in minute details. It comes across as an honest and well-considered account, portraying King ultimately as achieving a huge amount in his leadership or black Americans and making an indelible and positive mark on American and world history. Such achievements are set in the context of a more complex and flawed character, covering his bouts of depression, exhaustion, his sexual promiscuity and the rivalries and factions that were virtually ever-present among the organisations he was involved with. As well as being an excellent portrait of one of the C20th's greatest figures, this book also serves as a vivid reminder of the horrors of segregated America and a reflection on the continuing racial tensions that affect not only American but so many other countries.
