5.0 out of 5 stars A complement to the volume on Italian light tanks - a very good concise summary, 26 Dec 2012

The book is an interesting summary on the topic of Italian medium tanks and a complement to Italian Light Tanks1919-45. It is divided into sections on the historical context, the medium tank development (M11/39 to M15/42), the heavy tanks (P26/40 & P26/43), the associated Semoventi SP guns (of the 75, 90 and 105mm types), on the production and use, combat use and assessments of their worth, the use in German service and finally on camouflage (even though lots of camouflage info is given in the earlier sections). The book is then rounded off with technical data, further resources and a bibliography.

The book has a good number of period photographs, together with some colour line drawings and a couple of modern colour pictures of the surviving examples (a list of all surviving light tanks and their location is also in).

I also found the organization to be a tad more convincing than in the light tank volume and the balance between the various topics was pretty good overall.

To conclude I can certainly recommend the book to someone interested in the field, as it summarizes the topic of Italian medium tank design and use in a fairly compact format. The Kindle formating is also very well executed, which is an added bonus.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on a neglected topic, 26 Feb 2013

This review is from: Italian Medium Tanks (New Vanguard) (Paperback)
This is by far one of the best efforts amongst the most recent New Vanguards. This book represents a logical follow-up of the previous book by the same authors on Italian light tanks, but seems to be better written and better organised in its contents. As a person with more than a passing interest in the subject of this book, at first I was quite pleasantly surprised by the very high quality of illustrations, both in pictures and artwork. The text is authoritative being based as it is on the best books on this topic by the best Italian authors, amongst which the late Pignato figures prominently. The authors, providing a vivid picture of the employment of these tanks, try hard to somewhat dispel some of the most die-hard prejudices on Italian tanks and tankers, describing convincingly the (few) successes and the (many) failures of Italian tank design and manufacturing in the thirties and forties. It is a work that can be unconditionally recommended to anybody interested in WW2 warfare.

5.0 out of 5 stars A History of Italian Medium and Heavy Tanks and Assault Guns, 22 Feb 2014

This review is from: Italian Medium Tanks (New Vanguard) (Paperback)
This book a a good introduction to the heavier Italian Italian Armoured vehicle's that weren't covered by the volume Italian Light Tanks. Again looking at the limitations of Italian industry which limited Italian vehicle development compared with the Allies and led to various stop gap vehicles to try and make up the shortfall. The book is well illustrated with both pictures and photographs and covers the never really finished Italian Heavy Tank together with the various Italian Assault Guns based on the Medium Tank chassis.

In a sense its an easy book to right - there were only half a dozen Italian medium tanks - but on the other hand there's not a lot of info about them out there. Its nice, its descriptive, some good photos.
