4.0 out of 5 stars Good little bok, 18 Feb 2013

This review is from: Family Camping Cookbook (Paperback)
For many people the thought of camping, even for a weekend, is one of those stresses that they would rather do without. If it is not the thought of creepy-crawlies, strange lavatorial arrangements and carrying everything with you, then the thought of preparing food is the straw that can break the proverbial camel's back.

Maybe help is at hand with this book and it can help you appreciate that cooking outdoors "in nature" can be in fact a pleasure. You are not limited to just heating up ready-made items like soup and cooking sausages on the grill either.

The authors seek to keep things simple and the book it split into four distinct sections - quick escapes, by the beach, in the country and festivals & parties - with the aim of letting you find inspiration based around typical scenarios.

Before you get going with tent and rucksack overflowing you would be advised to read at least the start of the book as here there is a good primer to "camp cookery" and some thought-provoking comments about the benefits (or disadvantages) of buying all your food at home, buying it locally and even foraging in the wild for bits! Certainly when you read what you are "supposed" to take with you for your camp store cupboard it can be a bit of an eye-opener. Even the "must-haves" seem more than sufficient to this reviewer who does not like the thought of carrying it all... yet he knows just how frustrating it can be even in a stocked kitchen when things that you need and should have are not to be seen. Maybe the authors know best...

The book's style is very friendly and inviting and certainly the beginner to all things camping will find a lot of the information to be crucial... even the more experienced camper should find a lot to read here, if not just for the recipes. The text is written in a positive, inspirational and aspirational style that makes a change from some of the other books in this genre.

The book is full of little hints and tips that can often shine a metaphorical light bulb over the reader's head. There are even typical meal plans to help you get some ideas and, of course, make the truly most of the book - the quality of the information and the thoughts placed behind it show when you see there are even meal plans for young kids, older children and vegetarians too. No-one need go hungry if the cook does his or her stuff.

Once you look at the recipes you will be impressed with the sheer range of those available and many of these would also be suitable for the home kitchen or backyard too. Even some of the simpler fare such as Ricotta and Strawberry Croissants and Toffee Apple CrÍpes will soon get you dribbling! The recipes seem easy to follow and certainly do not seek to take a large chunk out of your holiday with preparation and cooking.

Plus marks are given for the book featuring both imperial and metric weights and measures (something simple, yet often overlooked) and a good but concise index at the back. A lot has been crammed into this little book without it impacting unduly on its design or "user-friendliness".

If you are not thinking of going into the wilds (!) then this book probably does not shine for you but it might still be worth a browse at a bookseller's as if you find a few "new" recipes for your arsenal it could be a good buy. If you are making plans to load up the rucksack and do some outdoor cookery away from home it would be certainly one book to consider as part of your "pre-trip" planning.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant!!!!, 12 Jun 2012
This review is from: Family Camping Cookbook (Paperback)
This is brilliant and i can't understand the negative reviews (elsewhere on amazon with doubled up listings) at all.The food is easy to make, easy to get hold of and easy to pack.....if you're going on a family camping trip then this is the book to take along with you( and theres some great'before you go' easy marinades (to save time when you get to the campsite and whilst the tent is being pitched and the kids are gathereing fire wood)....its child friendly...they will love getting involved however young or old they are.Its not complicated and you dont have to take half the kitchen from home with you at all...it calls for basic storecupboard ingredients...e.g a jar of 5 spice or a ziplok bag of flour(and you marinate in the bag then throw it away)!!! hardly half the kitchen is it.I think parents will love this and be able to tell exactly where the authors are coming from..its not complicated, pedantic or confusing..its good old fashioned family fun with a few modern utensils and a jar of paprika thrown in...have some fun and ignore all the silly reviews...you won't be sorry!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The stuff you cook at home is possible on site., 3 Aug 2014

This review is from: Family Camping Cookbook (Paperback)
for foodies that also camp you just sometimes want to be shown the stuff you cook at home is possible on your travels. for me this book really hits the spot nothing to over the top but still gives you the incentive to throw something together other than a bacon sarnie for breakfast or hot dogs and burgers for dinner.

The checklists and shopping lists are helpful too.

Only 4 stars as no index for recipes.

I bought this a couple of months ago so have used it a few times now and it is brilliant. i love the menu planner so shopping for the meals is easy. It gives you a whole list of meals for a weekend camping trip, which makes life easier and the meals are delicious. I now take it away everywhere when we are self-catering. The whole family loves these recipes so I would definitely recommend it.
