This a is lovely short story about a grumpy badger who doesn't want to stay up and celebrate Christmas with his friends.
Each time there is a knock at the door he gets grumpier and grumpier, but when disaster is about to strike will he save the day?
This is a super short story for little ones and is a twist on Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
It would make a lovely present for a young child - I've bought a copy ready for my 2 and 5 year olds!

Little Tiger Press edition/2009

Measuring in around 26.25 cm x 28.5 cm, this is a larger than average hardback book with colourful and durable cover.
Inside are 32 high quality pages in double-page spread format, of which 24 are story.
A few lines of clear text on most pages, suitably ENHANCED in places, for effect!

From the back cover:

'Christmas is coming and everyone is so excited - except for Grumpy Badger.
"PIFFLE!" he shouts. "I am going to sleep until the spring, and if anyone wakes me I shall be VERY grumpy!"
But then Grumpy Badger has three visitors....and there is a great crisis.
Will he learn the error of his ways before it's too late?
A charming twist on Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' that will make children laugh out loud in delight!'

And, our reading corner finally clears up the remaining leaves and twigs (!) from our Autumn and Bonfire Night related topics, the books are starting to come out for Christmas and I am always happy to narrate this one with its wonderfully descriptive text.

Example of text:

'It was almost Christmas, and the forest was a flurry of activity. The animals were bustling here and there - putting up the Christmas tree, wrapping presents, making tasty puddings and pies - while the young ones scampered about, squeaking with excitement. Everybody was looking forward to Christmas. Well, almost everybody.......' we turn over the page to find an extremely grumpy badger scowling out of his window!
Defending his intention to sleep over Christmas and way beyond, Grumpy Badger explains himself as a sensible creature, and checks his fully stocked larder before jumping into bed with his hot water bottle.

Then comes a knock at the door...
...then another...
...then another...

Grumpily he deals with the three callers...and...eventually he falls asleep (but it is a very troubled the book turns portrait for the next two pages)...with his thoughtless actions playing on his mind.
Just in time, he wakes with a start and dashes off to put things right in suitably 'happy-ever-after' style!

Superbly illustrated throughout by Jane Chapman, with lots to talk about in extension exercises, including simple counting games and 'who/what else can you see' opportunities for the younger ones (who are not yet familiar with the Scrooge-type Christmas run up!)

Other words include:

* spluttered, timidly, eiderdown, peeked, snorted, cheerily, tossing and turning, wriggling and squirming, panted, upright, scooped, grouchy...

My 4yr old loves this book - colourful pictures throughout with plenty of detail to pour over, and a funny, engaging story.
We are still reading and re-reading over a year since buying, and she asks for and enjoys the story all year round!
Highly recommended, great for reading aloud.
One of those books that you'll enjoy reading as much as your kids do!

I first read this book in a nursery I worked in. A great story with lovely illustrations. The story is about a grumpy badger who wants to be on his own but then realises it's more important to help others and have friends.
Since reading this book I have purchased three, one for my five year old daughter and the others as gifts for other children. Would reccommend as a great christmas heartwarming story.

Beautiful illustrations of badger and all the other animals in their Christmassy habitat. A really cosy and charming book. Children and adults adore most of the Little Tiger Press books. They are ridiculously low price considering the standard of paintings used to illustrate the stories. The books are quite large and most of the illustrations spread over two pages.

Thought this was funny so bought it for young relatives. My cousin's daughters think badger is like my father and he will probably remind a few people of a grumpy old man in their family. A gentle tale suitable for all ages.
