5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most unusuall S-F i have read recently
What I love about that book that is so different. No aliens, no big spaceships, no wars, no proud human race. It's just story of forgotten small group of people, on very unusual planet, very dark. The whole story is very well constructed, picture of events is very very convincing, and it is hard to imagining it in other way. Darkness and strange mood of this book...

3.0 out of 5 stars A good idea but unconvincingly developed
I had high hopes for this book after a glowing review in the Grauniad Review section one Saturday, but unfortunately it didn't deliver what I was hoping for. The tale of the descendants of a couple stranded on an alien, starless planet, the concept is good - a world where there is no sunlight and plants and animals have (somehow) evolved to produce their own. Thrown into...

A brilliant imaginative story with thoroughly captivating characters. Shame about the abrupt unsatisfying end. Would definitely still read another of his books.

3.0 out of 5 stars an interesting premise, but a little predictable, 23 Jun. 2013

Enjoyed the story, but not as unique as other reviews implied. Maybe a sequel will make the story end seem more satisfying.

A thoughtful and interesting book exploring the concepts of collective memory, social structures and loss.

Thoroughly recommended as an enjoyable and easy read with serious underlying themes.

I found this book gripping, the idea for the plot was clever and the basic language made it easier to sink into the story, to believe in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple story, but excellent exploration of some very deep issues, 16 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Dark Eden (Kindle Edition)
This book was excellently written. It beautifully presented a completely alien world and a primitive human 'settlement' on that world, through the eyes of the decedents of a couple of marooned starship crewman, one woman and one man. The whole issue of incest and interbreeding was really well done, as was the loss of the years of human history prior to 'settlement', which was presented to the reader through the oral history passed down to the key characters. However, the book is not a simplistic sic-fi novel. It is more an exploration of the human condition, how genetics, culture, history and environment shape us, and how humans learn and grow. It deals with some big themes in a very simple and understated way, such as leadership and male / female dominance of a society. In some respects the book reminded me more of "Lord of the Flies" or some of John Wyndhams work than many more modern sic-fi works. The pace was initially fairly slow, but grew faster as the story progressed, although I was hooked almost from the start by the writing. Clearly the story has been left open for a sequel, but as a simple stand-alone work I highly recommended it to anyone.

Well imagined piece of work with great possibilities for future sequels. Very human main character's growing up in a (to us) truly alien environment sustained by bio-luminescence. More please Chris!

Absolutely brilliant read, couldn't put it down! Writing style is great to read, interesting characters which are not black&white for most part. It was interesting to read it and reflect on the modern world. Looking forward to re-reading it again.
