5.0 out of 5 stars The Nabataean peoples enthusiastically re-visited & re-born, 1 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This book by Jane Tayolor with its compact format and glorious photogaphs could easily be dismissed as a coffee table book. But I implore you to take it up from the table and read and look on photographs worthy of an exhibition of their own. Even if you have never heard of the Nabataeans you will soon be caught up in the lives and loves of these ancient and gifted people. Jane Taylor writes an academic & well researched book with such enthusiasm and obvious love for the Nabataeans, that immediately you are caught up in her enthusiasm, and wonder why it has taken so long for this story to be told. A story which takes us from a nomadic tribe for ever on the move, who by the middle of the first millennium BC had cornered the market in the perfume and spice trade. Ancient "Body Shop" entrepreneurs they became wealthy by trading in frankincense, myrrh & spices.Their continuing power and wealth gave rise to their new home hewn out of rock - the legendary rose-red City of Petra. Travel down The Siq on a donkey on page 84 and onwards until you come face to face with The Treasury (Khazneh), the most famous of all the facades of Petra on page 91, and I promise you that not only will you want to travel through the rest of the book but, if you haven't done so already, but you will want to see the remarkable world of these amazing people for yourselves. It is a jewel of a book.
