I found Paul Hill's book to be very accessible, broad in the evidence considered and quite easily the best work on this topic I have yet encountered. From archaeology and written sources Mr Hill approaches the topic in a subject by subject manner, from the manner in which hostages where exchanged through to how Anglo Saxon warriors where armed. It should also be of interest to those interested in Viking warfare as the vast majority of conflict discussed details the Anglo-Saxon response to the repeated raids and invasions of the Norse.

There is also a quite reasonable discussion of naval operations, often neglected in other works.

This is an extremely professional piece of writing.

If you are looking for a research book on the period, this is it. The author provides some very good detail on small unit tactics and weapons of the age that gives more substance to the big picture strategic level Osprey Men at Arms series on Viking, Normans and Saxons.

Very well written account of the turbulent era of the anglo saxon rule in Britain. Not just for the historian or reenactor but for anyone interested in a massive turning point in British history.

If your are interested in history, pre 1066. Then this book is a must, so informative and cheap at the price.

Some interesting new information but the structure of the book makes reading pretty tedious with great lists of events laid out with little narrative or interpretation. Worth reading but not very enjoyable.

This book is simply a must for anyone interested in the military aspects of Anglo-Saxon England. Paul Hill's writing style makes the book an easy read for the complete novice as well as those with more comprehensive knowledge. I literally couldn't put it down, devouring the information this book contained.

Excellent book on Anglo-Saxon warfare up to 1066, my only criticism is that it jumps around a bit too much in terms of timeline and can be rather confusing for that reason.
However, it would be a good idea for the reader to have some knowledge of the main events of the period before reading this. It's deffo not entry-level into the period.
