5.0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed experience of 3rd Ypres, 11 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Some Desperate Glory: The Diary of a Young Officer 1917 (Paperback)
This diary of a young subaltern on the Western Front lay unpublished for more than 60 years and has recently been re-published. The bulk of its early focus is on a fairly quiet sector of the Somme battlefield where the 20 year-old Vaughan learns his trade and describes the daily life with an absorbing honesty. Then they head to Ypres. The final 40 pages of this book, relating several days in the late August stage of what became known as the Battle of Passchendaele, are unsurpassed as a description of the experience of battle in World War 1. If you think you've read everything about Third Ypres, you haven't until you've read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Desperate Glory, 24 Aug 2011
This review is from: Some Desperate Glory: The Diary of a Young Officer 1917 (Paperback)
An astonishingly powerful and moving account which brings home the absolute horror of warfare in general and trench warfare in particular. Edwin Campion Vaughan's diary culminates in the dreadful Battle of Passchendaele - the 3rd Battle of Ypres.

Campion Vaughan's diary is both stark and gripping. You must read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Desperate Glory by Edwin Campion Vaughan, 31 Oct 2011
I saw this book advertised in a Daily Paper and took a chance and ordered a "used" copy. The condition was better than I expected and looked almost new. I do not think it had been read as the pages inside were clean and in perfect condition. I would recommend taking a chance if the description is good and buying a used copy through Amazon
