If, like me, you know nothing of Londons East End or how it came into being, this is the book for you. It not only provides valuable links to East End resources, it also gives an in depth history lesson into how diverse villages and hamlets came to merge into what is generally known now as the East of London. This is priceless information helping people with East End ancestry to understand the location and movements of their ancestors in that area over a long period of time.

Very well written and easy to read, you do not have to be a genealogist to understand what this book reveals, go for it.

I recently confirmed that my paternal grandmother was born in Whitechapel (she moved to Birmingham as an 11-year old but none of her 10 children were ever sure of this). I purchased this book on the strength of other Amazon reviews and the Kindle extracts. In my 64 years I have been to London many times but only for the usual central area tourist spots and various football/cricket grounds. The East End is a complete mystery. This book has shed a new light on the area, covering what is now Tower Hamlets which is made up of all the old districts/parishes such as Whitechapel, Stepney and Bethnal Green. It is full of historical information and references for both online resources and where you can see original documents. This book is highly recommended. The only slight gripe is the quality of the maps/illustrations which look like bad photocopies. Personally I would not be happy with the e-version due to the need to keep referring to the appendices at the back of the book.

This is a very thorough guide to assist in family history research in the east end of London. Incredibly informative, the book enables the family historian to pinpoint the nature and location of sources relevant to their own family history. Various immigrant groups and non conformist groups as well as occupations are also covered.

For those that miss it (as I did) this book is meant to give guidence on east enders in the Tower Hamlets area. Whilst it does have specifics it is perfecly possible to take much information to the wider environs and adapt it to your specific needs.

The book is reasonably well-written, a little 'long' at times (as are most such guides), but most people should find some useful hints within its pages.

Comprehensive, well researched, easy to read. Has she done one equivalent which covers Barking ? Enjoyable even if it didn't cover my family history research area.

This was a gift for my wife. She has already found information from it adding to what she has from other sources.
