This review is from: The Rugby Zombies (Paperback)
Meet thirteen-year-old Arwel, in his school, 'Aberscary' Comp or in his family and you will quickly become engaged in his life. His family consists of Mr Rugby (otherwise his Dad, constantly changing his other religions), his mother who is always changing jobs and his siter Tania who is always changing moods. On the mantelpiece are photos of sporting glory and a pitiful one of Arwel in a team photo of the under-sevens. How can he rectify this lack of charisma? Perhaps not through his old friends, Glen (a bit of a liability) or weedy-looking Martin but through his new acquaintances who appear in the local sinister woods one dark and terrifying night. The zombies want him to form a team with them to put right past mistakes but he has his doubts! His friend Beth (a netball-playing library monitor) helps him and the narrative races along with laugh-aloud, innocent humour (Mum disliking 'friendlies' because of all the fighting) and mounting excitement. The locality is clearly and affectionately evoked: "Little rows of terraced houses crawled up the hillside like caterpillars" and such writing will improve the English of any young reader and be of interest to adults. There is a semi-serious point: that the Welsh do regard rugby as a religion and would bring back dead famous players if they could! This is not a book solely for boys or for the Welsh and, as a part of a trilogy, readers will want to press on to the sequels. Highly recommended.
