I bought this little book for a 3 night break in Lyon via the Eurostar and found it invaluable. It is small enough to fit into a pocket, but is packed full of information.

The book is divided into a number of sections
- Introducing Lyon (when to go, Festival of Lights, history, lifestyle, culture
- Making the Most of Lyon (shopping, eating and drinking, entertainment and nightlife, sport and relaxation, accomodation, the best of Lyon, suggested itineraries, something for nothing, when it rains, on arrival)
- The City of Lyon (Vieux Lyon, Presqu'ile, Croix-Rousse)
- Out of Town (Perouges, Vienne)
- Practical Information (Directory, Emergencies)
- Maps (Lyon, Lyon transport map, Vieux Lyon, Presqu'ile, Croix-Rousse, Lyon Region)

The book is very helpful on what to expect when you arrive by plane, train or road, and how to get around Lyon.

After the opening summaries about various aspects of life in Lyon and the history of the town the book tackles Lyon in three parts - Vieux Lyon (the old town), Presqu'ile (the peninsula between the two rivers) and Croix-Rousse. Each section is accompanied by a map which is more than adequate for getting around (but order the excellent Michelin map of Lyon if you want more detail). A short summary about each area is provided, followed by "Sights and Attractions", "Culture", "Retail Therapy", "Taking a Break" (cafes etc), and "After Dark" (Restaurants and bars and clubs).

The restaurant section was particularly useful. We arrived at 4pm on a Thursday night and went to have a beer with this book to consider our options. the book recommended a number of restaurants in various parts of Lyon so we took its advice and found that the book's recommendations were spot on - about both the quality and type of food served. The restaurants are given a price rating from £ to £££ to give you an idea of what you can expect to spend, and these turned out to be very good guidelines.

We used the book to plan what to do over the following two days and it never let us down. Details about each of the sights to visit are brief but the essentials are all there.

The transport map includes the underground (Metro), trolleybus, tram lines, and the funicular - and is well presented and immensely useful. I found it a lot easier to use than the transport maps in the Metro itself.

Addresses, telephone numbers, web addresses, nearest Metro stations and opening times are made for all restaurants, museums etc where available.

There's a short list of useful phrases inside the front and back covers.

There aren't many photographs but you wouldn't expect them in a book of this size.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyon City Guide, 10 Sep 2009

This book was very helpful when we visited the city at the end of last month. It's a good size, fits nicely in a pocket. It gives a little information on the (rich) history of the city, and the maps are handy, not quite detailed enough for my taste, but all the main streets are there. It is quite a general guide, but supplements information that I found on the web. The restaurant section was very good - we visited several that are recommended in the guide - but perhaps there should have been a few 'cheap eats' included - we found everything expensive generally.

I do recommend Lyon (City Spots) though, and I've decided I prefer Lyon to Paris (it's more laid-back) and so hopefully will be going again soon, and taking the book with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiny but packs a punch, 14 May 2010

This review is from: Lyon (CitySpots) (Paperback)
I loved this book. When I was looking for a book on Lyon there was precious little to choose from written in English so thought I was just settling - I was wrong. The book is TINY but is fabulous - it has so much in it (just like the city itself). The book has so much useful information for its size and it feels like the person who wrote this really loves the city.

I cannot comment on the accuracy of information on accomodation or most of the restaurants that were listed as I did not use the book for that purpose. But in terms of city information and permanent attractions it's great. The first part - intro, history, and tips on Lyon - really whets your appetite for the place.

Area guides are great, and the little street maps are good. Very well laid out pages given its size. Fits in the pocket and you can refer to it easily. Great to read on the plane as it doesn't overwhelm.Has a metro map and also little language tips dotted around too.

Supplemented with local tourist information (i.e. bus routes and current attractions) and any online searches specific for your particular tastes you don't need anything else. I'll be taking this same little book on a return trip if I'm lucky enough to go again, no doubt about it.

I bought this book for a short trip to Lyon and found it very informative. It told you some of the recommended hotels and where to eat and drink. The public transport map was very helpful and showed metro and tram lines in great detail. It was very good at telling you about what to see and do. All in all, a really comprehensive guide book and one that you can keep in your pocket all the time because of it's concise size.
