Asa Briggs, one of the great thinkers of the 20th Century, has been a mover and shaker in the political and educational world for more than seventy years. Now aged 91, but still burning bright, he gives us an insight into the man we didn't know with a fascinating account of his formative years in Yorkshire and an insight into the development in Britain of further education, in which Asa played such an important part with the founding of the Open University. A must for bulgy brains, 20th Century historians, Bletchley Park obsessives - and anyone who loves Yorkshire.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a rushed job., 27 Dec 2012

This review is from: Special Relationships: People and Places (Hardcover)
Asa Briggs has been a bundle of academic energy throughout his innovative life; fearlessly accepting new challenges from cracking codes at Bletchley to starting a new kind of university in Sussex, all this has been achieved, not just by ability but by his gregarious personality: this is what his present book reveals However, as he admits himself, he can't stop writing, and I am afraid that this shows in the finished product.
But to those who Know his name but not his content, this is a good introduction.
