Reading this first for myself, and then exploring how to use it with a young adults group, I found it really helpful. The exercises are accessible, practical and simple, and yet connect with the subtleties of my inner life in a profound way. They don't demand 'religious experience', but rather create a space where I can encounter God, and be myself in a healthy and natural way - whether in a dark place or an easy one. With the young adults group, I felt the language level might be too 'graduate level' and it could need an earthier touch, so I created a set of cards for the practices, and summed them up very simply. Placing these in a bowl on the table, I can invite us to pick a card, perhaps look for one that resonates if the first doesn't 'fit' the moment for us, then take half an hour to reflect and/or practice, and then come back to the group so we can draw together the threads of what we've discovered. I colour coded the cards, and made sure the Bible verse reference was included to help with navigation, and to connect each scripture to practice. So far a very positive response. This book will stay close by.
