This review is from: The Drawings of Henry Moore (Hardcover)
I`ve been in search of a modern equivalent of the long out-of-print T&H published collection of Moore's drawings by Lord Clark of Civilisation; this is a pretty good substitute in terms of quality and breadth of representation.

Moore's drawings greatly benefit from being reproduced in colour; his choice of materials, subtle use of colour, the tint of the paper all add to a particular "presence" which I find pervades his graphic work. I find that Moore's drawings appeal to painters as much as 3D artists; this is a very nice selection which covers most aspects of his output - his early life-drawings, shelter drawings, miners, mother-and-child subjects and his later "black" drawings. There are 140 illustrations, 110 of those in colour although this includes some photos of the sculptures and some comparative works by other artists - these are few in number though.
Although this is a fine collection it still doesn't match the Clark book in quantity and some subjects, like the sheep sketches aren`t covered; Causey`s objective is to place Moore's graphic work in context with the Surrealist and Neo-Romantic movements and to examine his sense and concept of space, so the choice of work is determined by the narrative.

This is still a good volume to have though; there are several books available dealing with specific sketchbook themes, but this is a nice general collection with an interesting and informative text.
