AS a 'beginning' researcher, I have found this book immensely useful, but I suspect that more seasoned researchers will also find much in it to appreciate. It is clearly laid out and very readable. The introduction alone provides enough comprehensive but succinct information to help the reader grasp the essential purpose and tasks of coding. The book does what it says in the title and, in addition to the introduction, provides sections on writing analytic memos, transcriptions, a long section on different forms and applications of first cycle coding methods, and then second cycle methods. There are good working examples all the way through plus exercises and examples in the excellent appendices. It concludes with a chapter on post-coding and pre-writing.
I found this book purely by chance as a link from another book I was looking for on Amazon. It is relatively new: 2009, and that is also an advantage as it is right up to date. The author writes very well and, unlike other research volumes I have ploughed through, his clarity of style and the straightforward layout made this an easy and enjoyable read. This is quite a feat considering there is so much information contained in the manual, but it is all logically laid out and broken up into manageable section headings. This also makes the book easier to refer back to and I suspect my copy will become increasingly dog-eared as I do just this as my research progresses!

I am a Ph.D. student in Thailand. I have to do my first study through qualitative methodology. I tried to read a lot of book in the library's shelve but I found that there is no book that indicate more details in coding methods. I found this book via Amazon and I think it is a worth when you are the beginner in qualitative research. This book lead me understand a whole process of qualitative analysis and a various kind of coding methods. It's good that you are a new researcher and attempted to find a good book which help you how to analyse your data. Cheers! Dio Thailand.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. As a part time, distance PhD student, I struggled with understanding how to code data for analysis and had no peers or tutors on hand to ask. This book is easy to understand, provides a range of methods and gives a lot of excellent examples. Any MSc or PhD student could benefit from reading this book.

I thought this an excellent resource for post-graduate students engaging with qualitative methods and for experienced researchers wishing to develop or expand their understanding of qualitative data analysis. It provides a really useful breakdown of a variety of approaches to tackling the coding of data and signposts well to relevant original sources.

This an excellent book - just what I needed when I was stalling with my PhD data analysis. It is a very practical guide - but well grounded in data analysis theory. I used it to help me get the best out of the NVivo research project software. Together they have given me new confidence and moved my research forward to new insights.
