I've bought a lot of guides since moving to London but this has been by far the best one. If you like old and cosy pubs this is the book for you. It tells you the best pubs and gives some history. Thanks to this book I've found some of my favourite places in London, I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a great guide to some of London's best pubs and a bit of the history of each. In the main section pubs are grouped by geographic location but at the front there is also a handy list of which ones are best suited for a number of topics including food, music, history, garderns, riverside and even open fires and more.

Clearly a lot of thought has gone into this guide, maps with all pub locations are included and even has a tube map on the back page.

I travel to London in two weeks, and I cannot wait to visit many of the pubs described in these pages. The book reviews 115 pubs, with full color pictures, histories, fun stories, etc., as well as gives information on how to find them and what kind of beers they sell. The book is divided into sections of town, but I also found helpful the "if you like" section. This has the best pubs for good real ale, architectural elements, historical significance and so on. If you love pubs as I do (and as the author does) you will love to have this book to digest. Of course, you will disagree on his list--why he leaves some that you dearly love out and why he included a few--but it's fun to discover new places to visit. The detailed introduction alone, which includes some basic pub history, is worth the price of the book.

This is a great little pub guide - and one of the best I've seen for London.
Peter Haydon's fascinating history about London's relationship with drink is a worthy introduction and he selects some great and quirky pubs, as well as some old favourites that tourists and pub aficionados alike will appreciate.
I highly recommend this book and we are currently, and very slowly, attempting to work our way (chronologically) through each pub listed - savouring the unique charm and stories behind each one! It's a great reference book or a good gift for someone who truly appreciates the tradition of a good English pub in the face of the ever increasing threat of 'gastro pubs' and chains taking over the city and rest of the country!

Having lived in London for most of my life I have drunk in a great many of these pubs over the past 50ish years. Nice to get a bit of background on some of them; to be reminded of some others, and a prompt to revisit some old friends. All round a good reference book,

If you like a bit of history with your pint, this is the book for you. It has more than 100 London pubs, ancient and modern, from creaky old inns to Victorian gin palaces. It's aimed at beer drinkers rather than the cocktail set and emphasises real ale over food, but it's a good collection, rich in history, and worth stowing in the bag before a day out in London.

Having recently paid a visit to our great capital, I found this book to be invaluable in helping me make the best of the visit and find some truly exceptional pubs. The book is logically divided up by region of the city, with a map at the start of each section showing the location of the pubs, followed by a short 1 page description of the pub and the points of interest. There are also indexes allowing you to search for particular types of pub, beer lovers, architectural significance etc, which are useful.

The book lacks a little in that there is no master map showing all of the maps, and you are forced to flick through section by section. Not knowing the city too well we were sometimes stuck for the right map for the area we were in. Also, at least one of the pubs (the Black Friar) is inaccurately sited on the relevant map.

We found some truly astonishing pubs, and flat Southern beer notwithstanding, we had a pretty good time. Northern drinkers will be interested to know that there is a large proportion of Sam Smiths pubs listed in the book, though these brews are still served with no head.

Invaluable guide, 4 stars.

If you are looking for a good pub guide I would say your search is over. I used this on a trip to the capital and found some good pubs just didnt have the time or energy to visit many. 4 or 5 in east London and all served real ale
