5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous introduction to the whole subject of working with wool to make your own yarn., 15 Feb 2011

This is a thoroughly enjoyable little book which is very accessible and easy to get into for the complete beginner to all things yarn. If you have always wanted to know how to go about making your own yarn but not known where to start, then this book is most definately the book for you. Straight to the point and also smaller than most other books of this type on the market (size wise) it is very portable and pops into your bag (or pocket) to go with you and be read anywhere.
Beautifully and clearly illustrated in full colour, all explanations are accompanied by highly informative pictures. Penny Walsh (the author) sets the scene by starting her discourse on the animals that provide the wonderful fibres, and unusually in books of this type, relates all to the natural world by combining both sources of yarn and sources of natural colouration as well as dyeing techniques. It is all related easily and with great clarity. So you end up with the whole picture from possibly keeping the animal yourself to processing its wool by collecting, carding, spinning, plying, and growing plants in your own garden, using them to dye your wool and ultimately producing the yarn you always wanted at your disposal at virtually no cost. And then what do you do with all that lovely yarn after you have had the intense fun of making it?. Penny shows you clearly how you can knit and weave with it and what it is possible to make (patterns and projects included!). I Love, Love, Love this book and cannot recommend it highly enough, especially to the textile student, beginner yarn enthusiast or even just to avid and curious knitters who are fed up with being ripped off for the very high prices of commercial yarn today. This book is a liberation and a triumph!!! Thank you Penny Walsh.

Great book, not I think for the very new spinner/weaver, that said it is very much about getting information that is useable and understandable, I found it very interesting and will keep this as a brilliant reference book for future work. Nice set out, and great everyday information that will improve my spinning. I would say a very useful book for all.

Lovely little useful book. Tells you all one needs to know on how to start in the arts of spinning, dyeing your newly spun yarn, and then how to weave it. Helps one in everything woolly. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book with good descriptions and all-encompassing. I did not need any further instructions and with experience one thrives and developes one's own techniques.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic but well written, 13 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Self-sufficiency Spinning, Dyeing and Weaving (Paperback)
This book gives a good basic overview, but does not go into any depth. If I wanted to actually spin, weave or dye, I would definitely be buying another book to supplement it. However, it does provide information (however brief) on a wide coverage of subjects.
