this is a school textbook, by son is studying at school (as its the best place to study) and this is necessary for his curriculum.

its by no means exciting, as its a school textbook, but its of good quality paper, printing is clear, and this is going to get a lot of use.

recommended!!!

This book is great preparation for children preparing for this new type of test, and is well worth the purchase money if your child is trying for the 11+ in one of the areas (such as Chelmsford Girls') that has taken this new approach to the exam.

Good luck to all those taking the tests!

4.0 out of 5 stars 11+ Verbal Reasoning and Comprehension Study Book and Parents' Guide for the CEM test, 17 Jun. 2014

Many schools and LEAs have opted to use the CEM Durham entrance tests, rather than the GL Assessment. The GL tests usually tested children in maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. The CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) tests are designed to be fairer and ‘resistant to prepping.’ In other words, children should have a more level playing field, with tutoring being of less help. However, ironically this has created a new market for workbooks, aimed at preparing children for the CEM tests and this Verbal Reasoning and Comprehension book aims to give your child practice in these new tests. I would suggest that if you are unsure which tests the schools you are interested in uses, then you should be able to find out from the Open Days. This book also has a useful website, which has information on which tests are used in different areas.

This is a very useful book if you are unsure about what your child will face in the Verbal Reasoning section of the 11+ CEM exam (although, in theory, CEM make no past papers available, so this is based largely on feedback from tutors and children who have sat the exams). There is a benchmark test, to see where your child is, information about the 11+ itself and then the book is split into sections included in the Verbal Reasoning test papers: Spelling, Word Meanings, Completing Passages and Comprehension. Although this is a study book, rather than a workbook, there are lots of questions and a pull out answer book at the end. Techniques of how to tackle the various questions are outlined and there are lots of examples. Obviously, simply by the nature of the CEM test, you cannot predict what exactly will be asked. However, if your child is taking the test, then this is a useful aid to give practice questions in areas which will probably come up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful resource for 11+, 19 Dec. 2013

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This Practice Book designed to help children practice skills needed for the CEM (Durham University) 11+ is not an official publication but rather, like other items in the CGP range targetting the CEM 11+, is based on feedback obtained from parents and tutors whose children/pupils have taken the test. The questions therefore might not entirely resemble those used in the actual tests, but are as close as anyone is able to get without having 'insider knowledge'.

As a health warning, it should be noted that this book focuses on only part of the range of skills needed for the CEM 11+ paper: which seemingly encompasses Non-Verbal and Numerical Reasoning questions in addition to Verbal Reasoning and Comprehension. Thus to examine more of the skills needed for the test, a second book (due for publication in January) is needed:

11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning Study Book and Parents' Guide for the CEM Test

The book covers an excellent range of language-based skills - including the spelling of irregular plurals, identifying synonyms and antonyms, vocabulary knowledge, and comprehension. 8 assessment tests (of increasing difficulty) are also included, and account for over half of the book's 78 pages. A detachable section, giving fully explained answers is also provided.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation for the 11+, 1 Sept. 2013

This review is from: 11+ Verbal Reasoning Study Book and Parents' Guide for the CEM Test (Paperback)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (cem.org) published this study book on 1st June 2013 so it can be regarded as up-to-date, although it's always worth bearing in mind that methods, systems and acceptable criteria do differ around the country - for example, some grammar schools incorporate non-VR in their assessment programmes and some don't. As for this book, it concentrates on two of the mainstays, VR and Comprehension, and while it's impossible to know for certain just how compatible it will turn out to be (fingers crossed) my own view is that it seems very hard to fault, the layout is clear and intuitive, it's easy for a parent to run through every aspect of it with their son or daughter, and although this is something we have not done ourselves I think it fair to say that a lot of children could benefit from it simply by working on their own. That's for a parent to decide most probably. What appeals about it is that it isn't full-on test questions throughout, rather it's a combination of study work that any child can use to improve their knowledge and understanding, and each section is finished off with a couple of summary questions relevant to that specific topic.

So again I can't really fault it, except perhaps to wish that it was simply bigger. But it's surely a valuable device for children to use to supplement their school learning, and any parent worried about the forthcoming 11+ test - just 3 weeks away as I post this review - should order this book. It can only be of benefit to their child or children - and if it's not written in, it can in theory be used in a year or so's time for any younger brothers or sisters when it's their turn.

This is a good resource with numerous examples of the kind that may come in the test. The layout is clear and concise the student should be able to able to discern and digest each of the sections. This is good way to really prepare a child for the test. Even if the test is not applicable for your area its central themes can do nothing more than help. However, as other reviewers have pointed out you only get one practice test that comes with the pack. At the very least a few more tests should have been included, this is an unfortunate omission.

My son, although not studying for the 11+, has benefited immensely from using this book. Working through part of the book he has already improved his written English, and he is writing much more fluently and using more varied vocabulary than before, all simply because he understands the various parts and uses of English better than before. He understands text better, and there's an improvement in his picking up on the nuances or hidden meanings in writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good concept for the struggling student, 12 April 2014

These types of books are a godsend to help struggling students get the help they need at home.

Helps with spelling, word meaning, cloze questions which covers verbs and connectives, using the Rules of English (sounds complicated but it isnt) and also comprehension, in understanding the questions, hidden facts, meanings etc....

Plurals can be a tricky subject for some and this book teaches you in the basic way to remember the rules in English and also the difference in which they are changed.

Homophones are words which sound the same but are written differently and mean different things, also teaches and shows examples of Homographs that are spelt the same but can have more than one meaning. All this is helpful and easy to teach to the struggling student. My granddaughter found all these books fun to learn from while teaching her the correct way to say or spell the correct word.

Good concept and good price.

This full-colour book is a clear, easy to read guide to success in CEM (University of Durham) 11 Plus Verbal Reasoning tests - everything's matched to the CEM requirements for thorough, effective preparation. It contains step-by-step methods for answering questions quickly and accurately, plus round-up questions at the end of each topic (with answers). A pull-out Benchmark Test is included to help identify the level that children are working at, along with a detailed Parents' Guide packed with useful advice. used it to set some tests for the grandchildren during the long summer holiday so their brains don't get rusty, and it also passed time on rainy days, we had some fun too which I think is the key to learning

My daughter is just gearing up for 11+.

This gives a good grounding in style and expectation of 11+ exam. We are used to Bond papers and we got this as we thought it would be a wider spread of styles. This is certainly true but the guidance is really quite specific for Durham papers and less for the general 11+.

I was hoping for a more general 11+ guide but as this is produced by Durham, it is understandably geared up towards these papers. Would have liked to see more general guidance.

That said, it will be very useful as another reference to help her through the frustration of 11+ and the pressure on both pupils and their parents. Every little helps

4.0 out of 5 stars FINDING AN ADVANTAGE IN THE 11+ EXAM, 18 Nov. 2014

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have used my review for the English 11+ Practice Book because I think it is also relevant to this particular book in the series.

We have been looking at Local Comprehensives and Grammar school opportunities and even possibly private education for out son who will be looking to move into secondary education in the next couple of years.

My concern is that schools in the private sector teach to the tests whereas my sons school is just a normal regular primary. The children in the school are not exposed to the kind of questions they might come across in the 11+ exam, it's not discussed and it certainly is not taught.

At one school I asked the question that even though he is bright, would he be at a disadvantage if he had not seen or practiced the kind of questions he might expect in the exam. The reply was equally simple, yes.

The advice given was that it would be very important to at least get some practice, some books can be helpful but tutoring would be much more beneficial. From the horses mouth so to speak.

Even if your child is bright they will be at a disadvantage against children who may have lesser ability but have been taught to pass the tests. The Grammar and Private schools are well aware of this but can't do very much about it.

At the very least your child needs exposure to these kind of questions otherwise they will not stand a chance.

This Verbal Reasoning study book is a start, as an introductory guide it can be very helpful, it is well laid out and easy to follow.

However to gain real advantage you may need to go down the tutor route. This book will help to reinforce the lessons.

One word of warning though, don't let it become onerous for your children.
