5.0 out of 5 stars Legally Addictive, what a barnstorming read!!
Fantastic, compulsive, addictive can't wait for the next instalment. On a serious note, as someone who rarely picks up a book outside of holiday mode this proved to be an excellent read, gripping to the point of obsession on my part, very difficult to put the book down, the intricate, but engrossing plot leaves you in total suspense from one chapter to the next...

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK Yarn, but no Clive Barker
I bought this direct through my kindle after hunting through titles in the kindle store, obviously I hadn't heard of the author but at such a cheap price thought it was worth a shot.

The overall story is interesting enough my main criticism is the number of characters - seemingly a new one every chapter! It's almost as if they're crowbarred in at every plot...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic adventure with a sharp modern twist, 8 Oct 2009

Fallen Heroes is a stylish supernatural thriller. It has a richness and a darkness at the heart of it, and an especially charismatic and characterful lead. The shifting strands of plot, counterplot and shadowy agencies, juxtaposed with pulp adventure make for a heady fusion of action romp nostalgia and sharp, modern multi-layered modern crime writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Action thrills in the vein of Indiana Jones and Dracula, 19 Sep 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Let me say this - Napoleon Stone is the Van Helsing of the modern day. A professor who still goes out and fights evil is an admirable character, and I enjoyed every one of the myriad characters in this action romp. The occult and cult give good scares, the plots-within-plots of heroes and villains alike combine to a boss-fight finale that couldn't have higher stakes. Immensely enjoyable. I'm looking forward to digging in to the comic books set in the same universe and am only sad I never got to be in the audio drama. YET.

I recommend this to anyone who enjoys Indiana Jones, Dracula or the recent MMO The Secret World.

5.0 out of 5 stars A First Class Read, 3 Mar 2012
I don't generally read fiction but, whilst looking for a little escapism on a long weekend away, I took a punt on this after reading the reviews; and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The story moves swiftly along, seamlessly moving the reader around different (but intricately connected) plot lines, the characters being so well drawn that one can actually "see" them. If, as has been suggested, this is the first part of a trilogy; I wait with eager anticipation for the next "chapter".

As seems characteristic of a Kindle edition book, there are a number of typing errors however; these pale into insignificance such is the intensity of the story.

This is a very stylish, clever and unpredictable story and would make a superb production on the big screen, this providing that they remain faithful to the original plotlines.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting fusion of ideas, 23 Jan 2009

I read this book when it first came out. Before Amazon started to sell it.
I found this book hard to put down, easy to read. An interesting mix of sci-fi, thriller, ancient mythology, the supernatural and modern day.

My biggest annoyance while reading this book was losing my copy part way through and having to wait a couple days to get a new copy delivered.

I can't wait for the promised follow up by the author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool stuff, 21 Jan 2009

Really enjoyed this after being nagged by the wife to read it. Starts out like an espionage thriller, then goes into action adventure, then vigilante flick and then demonic monsters start turning up! Couldnt fault it.
Mixes a few genres together seamlessly and gives you that cool "I have no idea whats gonna happen next" feeling because in the world created nothing is off limits and no-one is safe.

Fun stuff, I'd recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read., 26 Nov 2008

If indeed this book is the first part of a trilogy, then I keenly await the next parts.

The characters were engaging and well-developed, the plot was masterfully woven together from seemingly separate strands and there was the perfect amount of perfectly executed twists. Though it took me a rather short time to read (because I could barely put it down, not that it was too short), I felt attached enough to the characters that I hated to see them hurt. That, in literature, is an achievement not to be sniffed at.

How refreshing in literature of this kind not to be bombarded with ridiculously dramatic names? Alright, Sirus Crane was born to be a villain with a name like that, and Napoleon Stone is a hard name to live up to, but you won't see anything that steps over the eccentric/camp line.

I have given it five stars, because a book should be judged by its story, writing style and characterisation. If anything tipped me towards removing that fifth star it might be the small but significant number of typos that seem to have slipped through the net. But, as I said, such things have an insignificant impact on the overall readability of the book. Mister Nugent is an author, and should be praised for his mastery of narrative, not judged for his ability to touch-type!

I have also forgiven the tiny amount of noticeably expositional dialogue, because this is the first part of a trilogy. And because it is completely compensated for in how naturally the characters communicate with each other in general.

I highly recommend this for anyone interested in fantasy, sci-fi, occult fiction, or thrillers in general. It has been compared to the Da Vinci Code; it DWARFS the Da Vinci Code in scope and memorability, and it probably won't start any annoying conspiracy theories.

Loved this book. If you like stories that make you think and that keep you hooked this one you should read. It is planned to be a trilogy so am really looking forward to the next one... as a cross of supernatural and good old fashioned adventure Nugent really gets the imagination going and puts you right in the middle of the action, you really feel like you're there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab!, 5 Oct 2008
This review is from: Fallen Heroes (Paperback)
A rip-roaring read, with memorable characters and an original, nail-biting plot. While Fallen Heroes most natural audience might be young men with a penchant for fantasy or sci-fi, this thirty-something woman loved it. Big thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling mix of genres and concepts that doesn't fail to entertain., 23 July 2008

Fallen heroes is a thrilling mix of fantasy, thriller and modern day adventure that doesn't fail to excite. The book is an ensemble piece and the author managees to balance each character's contribution so that no-one is left out of the action. For those of us who visualize what we read, the action set-pieces are described in enough detail that every move can be followed.

As well as developing likeable characters (and some you'll love to hate!), the author brings in a few neat concepts that break the mould of what has come before. Brilliant stuff all round.
