Magical mystery and double-dealing ensue in this offering from Kathleen Duey and a title that will more than bridge the gap of Young Adult Fantasy Fiction to the adult world. A great offering that is not only well written, but has fully rounded characters that will speak to readers of all ages. Add to the mix top notch prose, a cunning mind and a principle protagonist that you just can't help route for and it's a tale that will be polished off in a very short time. Some lessons contained within on how to build your plots that many an adult author could learn from. I'll look forward to other offerings from this author.

I ordered this book as soon as i finished the first in the series 'skin hunger'. Both of these books are amazing - i am very disappointed that the final hasn't been written yet as i'm dying to know what happens. I am an adult and thoroughly loved this book. You can feel the desperation, the bleakness, and the utter despair from the characters. You can feel the grime, the darkness and the hunger - it's just so well written - one of the best books i have read in a long time. I have already recommended this book to a friend and she also raved about it.
I was wowed by Skin Hunger, the first book of this trilogy, and it took me a long time to get to reading Sacred Scars - because in my experience, the second books of trilogies are great disappointments.
Not so Sacred Scars. There's the troubling world of Hahnp, training to become a wizard he never wanted to be in a cruel institution of the unexpected and arbitrary. And then there's Sadima, cast out for trying to rescue the first victims of this strange academy, her punishment a breathtaking twist that sucks you deeper and deeper into this world so brilliantly rendered by author Kathleen Duey.
It's a second book in a trilogy, yes. And it's perfect. Waiting for the third book is going to be unbearable.
