A great book. My boyfriend considers himself a bit of a Beatle's expert but this book had lots of information about the songs that he didn't know.

I have to agree with a previous reviewer (B Tallon) and this book is not for any serious review of the Beatles..........much better (though a touch 'heavyweight') would be Revolution in the Head by Ian MacDonald.

If you are new to the Beatles 'folklore' then you might find this book a good intro to the famous stories behind some of the Beatles songs genesis such as 'Yesterday' coming to Paul in a dream and calling it 'Scrambled Eggs', 'Being for the benefit..' being taken directly from a poster blah blah blah... but for anyone with even a descent knowledge of The Beatles this is a total waste of money. Any songs that don't have a well known mythical beginning are briefly skipped over with inanities such as George meeting Pattie on Hard Days Night shoot, or that 'Nowhere man' was their first non-love themed song (anyone could sit down with the albums and work that out for themselves in 5 minutes, so not much of in the revelation stakes to be found here). Books that are cobbled together from the author reading other better, more thoroughly researched books then repackaged as a new angle is one of my pet hates. Should have a subtitle of 'an introduction to the Beatles song stories'. If you are a serious fan and know your stuff don't waste your money on this (or for that matter the new book about 'Revolver' which pulls a similar 'trick'). Nothing insightful, no new angles, no new information..... If you don't know a thing about the Beatles be my guest but for fellow lifelong followers - skip it.

This is a great book about great song writers. It gives an intriguing insight into the song writing craft, and the sometimes incidental and accidental moments that turned a particular 'good' song into something special. It is clear that John needed Paul and Paul needed John in the early years of their song writing, and they did spur one another on to produce some magic. George, on the other hand, needed no one but himself as he was quietly absorbing greater influences in the world. I would highly recommend this book to all lovers of song writing.

You wouldn't have thought that a) every Beatles song could have a story interesting enough for anybody other than Fab Four Fanatics; or that b) anybody could actually gather all those stories together and tell them in a way that could interest casual Beatles fans. This book disproves both those assumptions.

Thoroughly entertaining, well written and informative guide to all the Beatles songs.

great for reading from cover to cover, or just dipping in and out.

An excellent read even before you consider the subject matter which is absolutely fascinating. The dust cover was slightly distressed.
