5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift
This book is fantastic but rather cruel in the way it makes you want to try so my tempting beers and I wouldn't recommend reading it without a fine ale or cold one to hand! It's comprehensive, from the nuts and bolts basics, (what's the difference between Fuggles and Goldings?) to being a reference for choosing the very best beer, at home, Europe and the furthest corners...

1.0 out of 5 stars Old book, new title
What was not clear is that this is a 1985 book recycled under a different title. It was originally published as "The Ultimate Encyclopaedia of Beer", the main difference (apart from the page size) being that all the pictures have been taken out! It hasn't even been revised and updated properly - one of the recommended pubs in Munich is the Mathaeser Bierstadt which was...

What was not clear is that this is a 1985 book recycled under a different title. It was originally published as "The Ultimate Encyclopaedia of Beer", the main difference (apart from the page size) being that all the pictures have been taken out! It hasn't even been revised and updated properly - one of the recommended pubs in Munich is the Mathaeser Bierstadt which was closed and demolished in 1996! My copy has gone straight back for a refund, and I'm surprised at Roger Protz allowing a scam like this to be pulled. Deeply disappointing.

It's comprehensive, from the nuts and bolts basics, (what's the difference between Fuggles and Goldings?) to being a reference for choosing the very best beer, at home, Europe and the furthest corners of the world, including the Americas, Far East and even Africa. Protz is surely the expert's, expert and this is the first book of his I've read, it was great present. I've got a quality list of beers to find on holiday and a firkin full of information to impress the landlord on Saturday!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but a glaring error, 4 Dec 2009

This review is from: Roger Protz's World Beer Guide (Hardcover)
The book is a review, and skims the surface of the world outlining beers and beer styles. It's nowhere near the standard of MIchael Jackson's Beer Companion -and editorially, to include Mathaser beer hall in Munich, which became a shopping centre years ago is not ideal - anyone who has visited Munich in the last ten years would know of its (sad) demise - to leave it in a guide in 2009 smacks of editorial laziness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger Protz's World Beer Guide, 6 Dec 2009
This review is from: Roger Protz's World Beer Guide (Hardcover)
Though this is a reprint of a previous Protz title, this World Beer Guide really is a comprehensive & fantastic complete guide & well worth having.
It covers everything you need to know about the beers of the world and would be an ideal present for anyone keen on beer.
Can't wait to go abroard!!
