Middle aged author, now free from familial responsibilities, fancies a change of lifestyle. She's looking for rather more than "peace-and-quiet" and ends up, at the end of the journey, living a life in monastic, even hermetic, silence.

My high expectations for this book were somewhat dashed by chapter one, where the author name-drops Bill Clinton ("loyal friend... enormous resource") for no reason at all; and she confesses - wholly without embarrassment, I might add - to being a socialist and feminist. Things do improve from here.

However, this was for me a book that I enjoyed one day and yawned at the next. She's at her best when relating her own journeys and struggles; but there's long sections of, for the want of a better word, psycho-babble; and I just don't get the Christian thing at all. Sorry.

Initially I found this book really interesting but towards the end it seemed to lose direction and ended up with a lot of quotes from other sources.

I have to say I did struggle to finish it but having said that the parts that were good I enjoyed. I always keep books that have made a lasting impression on me unfortunately this one has gone to the great charity shop in the sky.

"A Book of Silence" is exceptional in its honest description of Sara Maitland's spiritual journey up to this point. The book is well-written, thought-provoking and has genuine depth. Yes, it's different - but it's also quite brilliant. I'm quite shocked that its current Amazon rating is a mere 4 stars.

Having eagerly anticipated the arrival of this book, I was most disappointed that the content was mostly about two things of little interest to me - Sara Maitland and religion! The author comes across as egotistical and claims for silence effects that are more properly attributable to solitude and wilderness. In this increasingly secular age, one would hope to read about silence in other than a religious context, but the book really offers no insight here. This book deserves to stay on a shelf in our increasingly noisy libraries.

John Cage wrote a silent piece and it is referred to in this book. Its popular name is 4'33'', but that is slightly misleading as that was the duration of the first performance. I have the score, which is entitled 0'0''.
