5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for every early years/ KS1 practitioner, 21 Aug. 2011
By
This review is from: Foundations of Literacy 3rd Edition (Paperback)
This is a fabulous book! The best early years literacy book I have ever come across. Sue Palmer and Ros Bayley have shared their expertise to write an incredibly thorough and practical book. There are so many fantastic ideas for the classroom to develop all areas of children's learning. All their ideas are highly developmentally appropriate and come from thorough research. The book really illustratse how we as a country are doing our children wrong by pressuring formal learning too early, with children not having sufficient opportunities to develop the essential foundations! The book reminds us that Sweden and Finland have the greatest literacy outcomes in the world and yet their children do not start any formal eduation until age 7. Follow the ideas in this book and I am certain all children will have the very best foundations to succeed in all aspects of language and literacy throughout their lives.

I am certain this book will become my teaching bible and I intend to keep it in close proximity at all times!

5.0 out of 5 stars FOL, 6 May 2012

This review is from: Foundations of Literacy 3rd Edition (Paperback)
"Foundations of Literacy" is a non academic, user-friendly book, providing practical guidance for the effective teaching of CLL in the early years, the structure of the book makes it possible for practitioners to dip in and out of a varied range of teaching techniques. Although aimed at 3 to 6 year olds, this invaluable source of information and guidance would be beneficial to all working within the Early Years Foundation Stage, including parents, because as the title suggests, it provides a balanced approach to the "foundations for literacy" which needs to be embedded from a very early age.

The book has been innovatively designed and written, using the colours of the rainbow to depict the importance of a "balanced approach to language, listening and literacy". Each colour represents one of the seven strands of practice which when interwoven, form the basis for literacy teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Foundation and Key Stage 1 practitioners, 19 Feb. 2013

This review is from: Foundations of Literacy 3rd Edition (Paperback)
Although written before the latest review of the Foundation Stage curriculum, this book explains the way communication and language develops in early childhood and how practitioners can aid it. It is full of games and activities that can be used and adapted for children in KS 1 too. The authors strongly disagree with the current drive for Phonics teaching in Year R, which is interesting! Only time will tell on that one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent information for all Early Years staff, 13 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Foundations of Literacy 3rd Edition (Paperback)
Now more than ever we need to impliment the fabulous ideas in this book by Ros Bayley and Sue Palmer. The top down pressure continues apace, especially with a new push from Gove and co. on Early Reading!!!!(will they ever learn). So validate appropriate practice and use the guidance in FOL to persuade the bosses that you know what you are doing and why. The children will thank you for it.
