If you want to understand what is happening in the Sudan today, and why, this is the book for you. It's well researched, academically sound, yet easy to read and understand. It's full of historical detail, covers the political, religious and economic development of the area. The book explores the division of the Sudan into two countries, Sudan and South Sudan in 2005, following the civil war, and looks at both countries today in the light of the discovery of oil.

The Sudan Handbook is unique, authoritative, reliable and up-to-date. The work of recognised authorities from the Rift Valley Institute, some of them Sudanese, some non-Sudanese, it provides a vivid yet balanced look at a wide range of topics in Sudan and South Sudan. This really is an indispensable guide for those seeking to understand the troubled present and complex past of the two Sudans.
