This book was loved by me, and loathed by my wife, over several days. I was equally informed and entertained page after page, and often felt that I just couldn't read fast enough. It also lead me to begin several conversations with my wife that began ' Did you know that...' which I am sure annoyed her to no end, which made the whole experience even more fun. You can not just enjoy yourself with this, but also, just maybe, impress a date with some awesome piece of knowledge that you gained from it. Or at the least, have some random pockets of information you can throw out to break awkward silences and to try and appear intelligent. Or not.

I would advise any parent to get this to get their kids interested in science in a fun way. I myself am not a parent just a big kid. The cornflour solid/liquid mixture experiment was tops!

Anyone considering this book will pretty much know what genre of entertainment it is from the title. It does not disappoint! One for the man or woman who has everything else or for those of us addicted to witty and intelligent trivia!

If you were turned off by New Scientist's earlier books of Questions and Answers, and want something a bit more involved, this is the book you need. All of the wit and invention that you'd come to expect from O'Hare and NS, but wrapped up in a great collection of experiments that are brilliantly simple, easy to demonstrate and sure to delight people of all ages.Great value, great fun, and with Winter drawing in it's not a bad purchase for rainy-day science.

Great experiments but if you want to really get the old- and young- grey cells working then I suggest pairing it with "Can a Robot be Human - 33 Perplexing Philosophy Puzzles" by Peter Cave. The two together should see most families through the Christmas boredom!

FANTASTIC FAMILY FUN,

Armed only with kitchen equipment, some magnets and this book, my seven year old daughter and I have spent many happy hours exploring physics and making a huge mess. The instructions are entertaining while being very easy to follow and HOW TO FOSSILISE YOUR HAMSTER is full of brilliant suggestions of how to have fun and learn something along the way.

I bought this for a present for one of my staff at Christmas. It amused me (and I am a pet lover who would never do anything unkind to a hamster!)
