This review is from: The Mystery of the Enchanted Crypt (Paperback)
The ultimate anti-hero Gonewiththewind is released from a psychiatric institute to assist the Barcelona police in their search for a teenage girl gone missing. Without money or place to stay, he only has his imagination, his wit and his survival instinct to rely on.

The plot may not be as well-wrought as one would expect from a detective story, but the wonderful cast of characters, the vivid depictions of Barcelona's lesser neighbourhoods and the hilarious situations Gonewiththewind finds himself in more than make up for this shortcoming. Mendoza's accessible style makes for light reading. This may not be Nobel Prize material, but it's very, very entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Smelling Detective, 28 July 2011

Bought this as I had laughed aloud reading "No Word from Gurb". The most unlikely detectives are the best and "Gonewiththewind" has joined them with a wry look at the social underclass of Barcelona. You wouldn't want to get too close to him and you couldn't expect him to watch your back in a fight, but his surreal methods of solving this whodunnit get results. Funny, warm-hearted and witty it shows just what the under-dog can achieve.

My husband hated this but I found it unusual and often very funny. Central character nothing like the normal 'hero'
