5.0 out of 5 stars An life-enhancing excursion on Italian rails
A wonderful, telling series of musings, notionally on the author's experience of Italian state railways, but at its best on the little joys, absurdities and annoyances of human life in general. This book will be particularly appreciated by those who know what it's like to travel with Trenitalia, but for those who don't, the book offers a particularly insightful...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars it felt more like a series of articles than a book - hung ...
I too have travelled the length and breadth of Italy on the railways, and found the first part of this book a delightful detour into memory lane. Why have they got rid of compartments? and intercities - so was in full agreement with Tim Parks until he went south. Living in Sicily i share little of his opinion and musings, and what really niggled was his 1 line throw...

This review is from: Italian Ways: On and Off the Rails from Milan to Palermo (Hardcover)
Tim Parks has written another beautiful book about Italy, based on his experiences of using the Italian railway system. Italian Ways is packed with stories both of his pleasures and his frustrations (particularly concerning ticket inspectors and fellow passengers) as Parks describes his struggles to get to grips with the system's idiosyncrasies. His experiences are inevitably bitter-sweet and, as is the case with the best books about Italy, Italian Ways is written by an author who has not just a genuine love for the country but understands its infuriating character too. It is a brilliant book - immensely readable yet literary - and, since Parks has lived in Italy for 32 years and understands it well, it contains innumerable acute observations about the country. His great gift is being able to see what is interesting and memorable in the absolutely mundane and commonplace. And, just as one goes on loving a wayward son or daughter, Parks cannot hide his deep love of Italy and its people.

1.0 out of 5 stars You wouldn't want to sit next to him on a long journey, 25 Jun 2014

I chose this book because I love Italy and because it was half price, Alas, this is what you might expect from anyone with a train-spotter mentality who grew up to be a boring middle-aged man. By around the 5th mention that he had 'lived in Italy for 30 years' I was ready to sling the book across the room. But I couldn't be bothered to waste the energy.
Some parts are mildly interesting and a few [too few] are even amusing and good then, all too soon, the author remembers that he is an academic and reverts to stodgy boredom again. And he wonders why Italians always clock him as a foreigner ... look in a mirror Mr Parks and listen to yourself and you will see how alien your outlook is when compared with the laid back Italian personality.
Obvious.
