5.0 out of 5 stars An life-enhancing excursion on Italian rails
A wonderful, telling series of musings, notionally on the author's experience of Italian state railways, but at its best on the little joys, absurdities and annoyances of human life in general. This book will be particularly appreciated by those who know what it's like to travel with Trenitalia, but for those who don't, the book offers a particularly insightful...

3.0 out of 5 stars it felt more like a series of articles than a book - hung ...
I too have travelled the length and breadth of Italy on the railways, and found the first part of this book a delightful detour into memory lane. Why have they got rid of compartments? and intercities - so was in full agreement with Tim Parks until he went south. Living in Sicily i share little of his opinion and musings, and what really niggled was his 1 line throw...

Read this book while on my first visit to Italy - 5 weeks and an interrail pass. The book was invaluable in helping me to understand Italians, and the Italian way of doing things! Also helped get my head around the quirks of travelling by train in Italy and the bloody rules and regs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 7 Sept. 2014

What a marvelous book. I was expecting great things as Tim Parks can write about anything and make a good book of it. Can't wait to get to Italy to see for myself. I told my daughter, who was going on holiday there this week, to make sure she got her tickets validated!

4.0 out of 5 stars Understanding Italy, 16 Aug. 2014

(REAL NAME)
A real insight into the Italian way of thinking and behaving with examples taken from the railways. How he managed to get to the bottom of some of the convoluted procedures is amazing - it must have taken all his 30 years there. Easy to read and extremely interesting

The perfect accompaniment to anyone's day at work, travelling from work or just enjoying a weekend.

Parks has a brilliant writing style and it shows through hugely here. A book I can and will see myself re-reading again and again for years.

This review is from: Italian Ways: On and Off the Rails from Milan to Palermo (Hardcover)
Purchased this book as I want to travel by rail through Italy on the routes described. Good mixture of narrative and travel information, entertaining and instructive. Whetted my appetite for a similar journey.

A wryly funny account of using all the different types of trains on the Italian railways which is both informative and readable. His descriptions of the people he meets on his journeys ring very true!

somewhat appropriate at this time - it has a certain truthfulness about it and something that only an Englishman could describe (i speak as somebody born of an Italian mother and an English father

4.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps not as compact as his other books about Italy ..., 13 Aug. 2014

Perhaps not as compact as his other books about Italy. It is, at times, something of a rant but for those who have an affection for all things Italian, it is a delightful indulgence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Italian Railways, 10 Oct. 2014

Tim Parks' journal about his everyday commute and journeys by train in Italy. Quite an easy and interesting read with dry, sarcastic humour (he's so British). Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read from Tim Parks, 24 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An interesting book, with an original topic. I especially liked the final stages of the journey, in the deepest south of the country, where few visitors are to be found.
