This review is from: Doctor Who: The Widow's Curse (Paperback)
Published in 2009, this collection features the Tenth Doctor (as played by David Tennant) with Martha and Donna, in strips from the Doctor Who Magazine:

1. The Woman Who Sold the World (DWM 381-384): On the planet Loam a planet clearance is just beginning.
2. Bus Stop! (DWM 385): "I think I'll start riding me bike to work". This is great fun, a story told on the edges of the annoyance of a poor bus passenger the Doctor happens to sit next to.
3. The First (DWM 386-389): 1915, in the Antarctic, something moves ... This is a great story, well-crafted in its exposition, and with great artwork, great characters and a really good plot.
4. Sun Screen (The Doctor Who Storybook 2008): Not lotion, but a great solar shield. But where there's light, there's darkness - the dark places of the universe.
5. Death to the Doctor! (DWM 390): A conference to combine forces against the common enemy - the Doctor! I loved the artwork on this one, as well as the humour in the story.
6. Universal Monsters (DWM 391-393): There's something stirring in the woods outside the village ...
7. The Widow's Curse (DWM 395-398): The Sycorax seek vengeance ... This would make a great premise for a sci-fi novel, the whole Sycorax ethos deserves further investigation I think.
8. The Immortal Emperor (The Doctor Who Storybook 2009): At last, the answer to the terracotta Chinese statues ...
9. The Time of my Life (DWM 399): A snapshot of Donna with the Doctor.

Followed by about 20 pages of commentary and upcoming collections.

Overall, I definitely like the character of Martha and her relationship with the Doctor more than that of Donna. I find Donna abrasive and rather annoying generally. So maybe because of that (or maybe they were just better stories) the stories I enjoyed most were those with Martha in, and that was most of the stories in this collection. Donna turns up first in story 7, The Widow's Curse - that's a good story in itself. This is a really good collection of Doctor Who stories, and thoroughly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the Colour Reprinted Doctor Who collections, 3 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Doctor Who: The Widow's Curse (Paperback)
I have long been a fan of Doctor who, having watched and read virtually all the original books. The Doctor Who magazines were something I also picked up on for years. Out of all the collections of the comic strips, the first - The Iron Legion - is undoubtedly the BEST, and enough to make a fan out of almost anyone. But it's still in Black & White. Out of all the coloured-art collections, this comes second. Most of the later strips have been disappointing, but the ones collected here are excellent, and frankly astonishly scary at times. From the humour-laced encounter of a world condemned to destruction 'Hitch-hikers' of the Galaxy-style', to the most creepy and realistic Zombies in the Sycorax story, to the old-fashioned un-nerving First Contact story set in the frozen North Pole, these are gems of the comic series - better than the rest with the exception of Iron Legion.
