4.0 out of 5 stars impressive research
This is an exhaustively researched work, which challenges previous conclusions about the British volunteers who fought under Simon Bolivar in the wars of independence in modern day Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador. If you are looking for facts, figures and in depth analysis, then this is an excellent study.

This book seems to have been written by an history academic merely to collate statistics to prove that the British and Irish Legions which supported Simón Bolívar during his War of Independence against Spain did not really exist as some romantics believe them to have existed.

Whilst, of course, I do not have access to all his sources of information I must say that having lived in Colombia and Ecuador for nearly 12 years certainly the British and Irish mercenaries are part of the folklore of these two countries; indeed in Bogotá there used to be a tradition of an annual presentation by the British Ambassador to the military cadet who passed top of his class from the Colombian Army Academy in remembrance of the Legions. And there is a British Cemetery in Bogotá which seemed to me to be well populated by British and Irish veterans of the War of Independence.

Anyway - it is not a bad addition to my library.
