5.0 out of 5 stars Sailing in Italy and Sicily, 18 Oct 2011
This review is from: Italian Waters Pilot (Hardcover)
Although this is just an updated version of an existing publication it is none the less the most useful aid for sailing in these waters, giving the latest telephone numbers and VHF channels. It not only provides the necessary information for the sailor but also gives the most interesting local and historical information. A most interesting book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful companion to a bareboat charter holiday, 30 Oct 2013

I bought Rob's book to use on a charter around the Amalfi coast. I assumed there would be charts supplied, but no pilot book. I was wrong, an earlier version of Italian Waters Pilot was onboard, but in German, so I made the right call to take my own.

Small warning - this is a surprisingly heavy book and replaced several tee shirts in my case to avoid too much weight.

It proved very useful, especially around Ishia. I'd say it is better than most of the pilot books I have used, but not up there with my benchmark, the Shell Channel Pilot, by Tom Cunliffe.

If you charter a Jeanneau 49DS out of Stabia de Castellammare have a look in the chart table, if there is an English version of this book it may once have been mine as I left it behind (I did say it was heavy).

but it's not nearly as good or inspiring as "Cruising Galicia" or "Atlantic Coasts of Spain & Portugal" also published by Imray. The former has excellent extra information in the form of land maps showing roads, airports, etc. - really useful for crew changes. Suggest all pilots should include these. It also included recipes, descriptions of the cuisine of the area, etc, which all added to our enjoyment of the area.

5.0 out of 5 stars As usual : an indispensable tool, 22 Jan 2013

Almost indispensable for sailing in the western and southern Italian waters (eastern waters are in the Adriatic Pilot). Should I suggest to combine it with other books (in Italian) ? [1] Navigare lungocosta : 6 books written by a sailor (Mauro Mancini) who knew these waters by personal practice. They are full of practical information about everything a sailing yacht needs to know and take into account, with a lot of hand drawings showing harbour lay-out and possible problems, landscape, etc. But it is hand written : not always easy to read for a somebody who does not practice Italian. [2] Pagine Azzurre : a full guide of harbours all around Italy (including a survey of Côte d'Azur, Malta, Croatia, Slovenia, NE Tunisia), with phone/e-mail addresses, description of facilities, harbour maps, etc. For harbours and marinas, more complete than the Imray (but his one has plenty of photographs), but nothing about anchorages : therefore the interest of the Imray.
