Most yachtsman probably know that for over seventy years now the Shell Pilot has been the best pilot for any amateur yachtsman cruising on either side of the English Channel or across it. Successive editors have expanded and improved it, adding to the information given and to the aerial colour photographs. The latest edition is superb and worth every penny to anyone planning or making a cross-channel cruise.

Note that 7th edition is now available and this is only the 6th, so wait for this to change or get more directly.

This book is invaluable to anyone with a boat wanting to visit ports they don't know along the channel coast. Note it is important to have the most recent edition - there is nothing worse than relying on out of date information. This is the third edition of this book that we have bought.

The Shell Guide does contains the information you need to choose which destinations to visit. What isn't obvious is that Tom writes with a wit and lightness that turns what could be a repetitive listing of facts into an enjoyable read.

Excellent pilot guide to the English Channel. All that you might expect but more in that it is larded with Tom Cunliffe's personal asides which make it readable and memorable: a model of how to enliven fact after fact. I particularly liked his mordant description of a petty offical as having a wall in his office that displayed a collection of art better viewed by a gentleman than a lady, or the tidal concatanation from Isle of Wight eastward to Ramsgate that if caught at the correct time bears one eastward for ten hours: known as the gravy train "long before the EU was thought of". Not often you find a pilot you can, or want to, read in bed.

excellent, clear and utterly helpful. My son has previous ones but says the update is important. The Clarity makes his forthcoming cruising an exciting prospect.

Great for anyone wanting to navigate out of the Channel ports. Excellent photographs of transits and harbour approaches, local information. Much more detailed than the Almanac. Used this between Hamble and Cherbourg, out of Portsmouth into the Solent and also in and out of Cowes. Impressed even the instructors.

This is a very useful sailing pilot book with lots of good photographs so that the sailor is shown in advance exactly what to expect before arriving at a destination. Pilotage instructions are clear and not too detailed resulting in welcome simplicity

Arguably the best pilot book for the English Channel and with significant updates from the previous edition. Used in conjunction with an almanac, it's worth its weight in gold! A 'must have' if you sail the South Coast and English Channel.

A beautifully produced and informative guide to the ports on both sides of the Channel. Even if you only visit a few you can spend plenty of winter evenings dreaming of where your yacht may take you in the summer.
