4.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what it appears to be ...., 15 Nov 2013

This review is from: Foundries and Rolling Mills: Memories of Industrial Britain (Hardcover)
Please dont buy this book if you think it covers just Foundries and Rolling Mills! The title is somewhat misleading. The book has chapters on sources of power, ie Wind water and steam: Mills and factories: Iron and Steel: Mining: Railways: Steam ships and steam engines, and a site gazeteer with maps.
The book was first published in 1999 as "Fred Dibnah's Industrial Age" and the earlier print is the better of the two, being on better quality paper and with the images located throughout the text, rather than as one block in the middle of the book.

To my mind this is the BBC trying to be clever and hoping that by changing the title of an existing book they wring out more sales. Certainly fooled me!

That gripe apart though, it is a thoroughly enjoyable book in Fred's own inimitable style.

Extremely interesting and down to earth account of part of our industrial heritage - all in Fred's inimitable style. The book is made more useful by the addition of a list of industrial sites across the country, with guide maps and details of visiting hours etc.

An excellent book, an enjoyable read. Dunno how much is Dibnah and how much is Hall, but it doesn't seem to matter.
