2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and disjointed, 15 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Crusader Castles in the Holy Land: An Illustrated History of the Crusader Fortifications of the Middle East and Mediterranean (General Military) (Hardcover)
Having visited some of these sites in the Middle East I had high hopes for this book.
The print is clear and the illustrations good; the diagrams are weak but worst of all the organisation of the subject matter is poor.

The intended scope of volume is a laudable aim; the introduction is adequate, and whilst the chronology is good, -though lacking in maps- the main text is disjointed and often repeats itself.

The chapter 'The Tour of Castles'(pp71-87)is woeful; it does not even include a map to locate the selected ten sites, -there is a general map on p10.
For each selected castle I had expected:
a) a map to highlight its strategic importance;
b) the majority of the photographs of that castle to be within that section, not scattered at random throughout;
c) a large annotated plan of each castle;
d) an illustration of the castle in its heyday(the type that Osprey Publishing do so well);
e) the specific history of the castle, however brief, including sieges, up to what remains and visiting present-day.

I felt cheated by the abundant inadequacies!
