I was given this book as a gift last week after getting off to a false start with a different poor-quality beginner's crochet book. This one is much better and I've found it genuinely useful. There are also nice touches like a few pages on the history of crochet, and several pages dedicated to more unusual stitch effects to try once you've mastered the basics. Good clear photographs and advice.
I used it as a UK reference alongside free American how-to videos & blogs online (google 'craftyminx crochet school', it's brilliant) and it was perfect for this. Crochet terminology is different in the UK and the US, so it's worth having a UK book alongside any American stuff you use.
Only four stars because I would have really appreciated advice on how not to miss or accidentally add stitches when turning rows.
