Mark Antony (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Johnny Owen (Mainstream Sport) (Paperback)
This book tells the story of Johnny Owen, who rose to become the British and European Bantamweight champion, who tragically lost his life in 1980 whilst fighting Mexican Lupe Pintor for the world title. The story of Owen's great dedication to the sport he loved, and his love of his family, and the love they shared for him, which lives on to this day.
In 2002, Johnny Owen's Father Dick Owen, also the boxers trainer, in Johnny's corner that fateful night, travelled to Mexico City to meet once again Lupe Pintor, to make his peace with him. This was the subject of the award winning BBC documentary film "Johnny Owen, the long Journey". This book tells of that programme, and the Owen story, interspersed with the account of that trip to Mexico, which subsequently led to Pintor travelling to Merthyr in Wales to officially unveil a statue of Johnney Owen.
The links between Merthyr and Mexico City are cleverly perceived here, with young men turning to the dangerous sport of boxing to make a living, and in Johnny's case, to find self expression, and an outlet for his great fitness levels.
The meeting between Dick Owen and Lupe Pintor was emotional, and for the two men concerned, helped to ease 22 years of pain in between the present and that night in Los Angeles in 1980.
Johnny Owen comes over as a shy, charming young man, who's life was so unexpectedly cut short whilst at the pinnacle of his achievements. But because he lived his life to the full enjoying what he did best he never wasted a moment, and in that way maybe he lived longer than most people.
As of writing, a film has been scripted, and it is something which I am sure the people of Merthyr, boxing fans, and those who have been touched in some way by this remarkable story, would love to see in motion picture.
