5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic, must read for all Christians, 8 May 2013

So many people believe the Old Testament to be dry and dreary, with nothing applicable to us today.

Those people are spectacularly wrong, obviously it's the word of God - which has stood for thousands or years against all challenges, and will stand for eternity. It is applicable always, no matter the period of time we stand in, and reading Davis commentary on 1 Kings has been so enjoyable for these reasons - he makes the text so practical, and applicable to daily life. Its amazing to see how absolutely nothing has changed in politics at all since the days of 1 Kings!

His treatment of Elijah is absolutely fantastic, adding a twist to what many people believe (without truly studying the text) about the Great Prophet. One thing I took away from the commentary is seeing how all the way through 1 Kings, God is completely sovereign and completely in control of history. Another thing I took away with me was how I was consistently astonished by the grace God showed to Ahab - How many chances to repent and turn to God Ahab was given - and he rejected all of them.

I hear that Game of Thrones is quite popular with people at the moment, well, Kings had all that drama long before Game of Thrones!

Every serious Christian should read this, and in addition to that all of Davis' commentaries in the Focus on the Bible series, they have, with no exaggeration changed my life, and opened my eyes to the much neglected world of the Old Testament.

BUY IT NOW!! You will in no way regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say that hasn't already been said?, 13 Feb 2014

What can I say that hasn't been already said. If anyone is tempted to say that the Old Testament is dry and boring then they should get this for their Pastor's birthday or Christmas present and see the quality of his preaching on 1 Kings improve. Boring preaching is a crime and there is no excuse for it, especially when there are commentaries of this calibre to be used as a resource! Dale Ralph Davis has a unique touch when it comes to writing, he is a lot of fun to read and yet he provides some real theological depth and reflection on the text. I strongly recommend that before you spend a great deal of your hard earned money on some masterly, heavyweight, academic, and probably as dull as dishwater commentary on the book of 1 Kings that you check this out first as I don't believe you will do much better. I can certainly guarantee you're certainly had more fun reading it, whether for personal Bible study or to preach it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful, 23 Oct 2010

I've read and reread these commentaries (1 and 2 Samuel, and 2 Kings as well) and they are excellent, he takes time to show the structure of the text which could prove boring but isn't and explains it very clearly, making it very readable, without dumbing down. His treatment of Elijah is stunning but so are the lesser known passages. Ralph Davies is an excellent expositor and gives much thought to practical application. It's that sort of commentary. You could quite easily use these as devotional as well as sermon prep etc. His illustrations from the American Civil war add a bit of colour as well. Yet don't think of this as being a lightweight, it isn't.
