5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on wine I have seen, 1 Aug 2011

This is easily the best book on wine I have read, and if you also buy the World Wine Atlas, you may never need to purchase another book on the subject!
It is clearly aimed at the enthusiast or the professional though rather than the casual wine lover. It is a superb reference book, one to come back to again and again.
There is loads of regional detail, especially on the Old World, and excellent information on wine making and grape varieties. For an Italophile like me, its fantastic to have a fully comprehensive list of all DOC wines, and indigenous grapes for every region.
The only slight shortcoming is the overview of key producers for each region, which is fairly brief, and only really covers the main producers, not so much of the 'under the radar' small independents which can be such a joy to find. Best to seek out specialist merchants for those, though.
Overall, an essential volume for the serious wine enthusiast.

I found this book very useful whilst preparing for my WSET Advanced Wines and Spirits exam.
It is well written and easy to follow. I used it in conjunction with Jancis Robinson's Wine Course and her wine encylopaedia as back up material to my course.

It's an easy read, well laid out and easy to reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars not really fully revised, 21 Jun 2014

I had the 5th edition, so I bought the 6th to see the update of the vinery, the description of the wine region is exactly the same of the 5th edition, some of the principle vinery does not have an update, like Quintarelli Italian wine producer, on the latter many new vineries were added, so still worth buying the 6th edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh Johnson's Vine campanion, 22 Sep 2011
This review is from: Hugh Johnson's Wine Companion: The Encyclopedia of Wines, Vineyards & Winemakers - 6th Edition (Hardcover)
The book is great and easy to read. Everything you sohuld know about vine.
And I do like the design and quality of the book. Advise you to buy it in hard cover, this is the kind of book that is extremely useful to keep in your home library to review and read articles from it periodically.

My father asked me to get him this book after he had seen it a friend's house. Huge amount of information about a wide selection of wines. His only complaint is that he can't put it down!!
