I have used Peter Hayman's Pocket Guide since an edition I bought in 1981. I have just replaced it as the first one has finally broken apart. On reflection, I should have replaced my copy as each new edition came out. Looking through this copy, I find a much more comprehensive guide to recognition, including more of the nuances that distinguish look-a-like birds. It also lists almost a 100 more birds than my first copy. It's an ideal birding book to slip in your pocket whenever you go for a walk.

If you want a more comprehensive guide, I would recommend Collins Bird Guide

A wonderful little book, packing in a great deal of detail very efficiently. Not the complete field guide, but great if you want to travel light, yet have complete, basic coverage of Europe & UK. No distribution maps - you'll have to look those up when you get home. A minor point: in our copy the cover illustration is identified as Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, but actually appears to me to be male Greater Spotted.

I have only recently (retired) started taking an interest in watching the various birds that come into our garden and on walks and this book has been very useful. Has most of the birds that come into my garden but I hope to be in a position to outgrow this book before too long.

Had a previous edition of this book. It is invaluable to carry around when going out and about in the countryside. We like to keep a copy of this book in each car in case we spot a bird we can't identify immediately.

Brilliant book, great descriptions and pictures although a little heavy for a "pocket" book, it's still small enough to put in your bag for days out. It's definitely accompanying us on holiday this year!

Marvellous little book, as it says onthe cover it is pocket sized and yet really comprehensive in its coverage of birds.

The detail and quality are excellent, with fine printing despite its pocket size. It's a tad heavy in the pocket because of the quality paper but we've field tested it and are really happy with it.

This is a very fine book-extremely useful to use and to carry when out at nature reserves-helpful illustrations and potted histories of individual species.
