5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE BOOK...., 29 Aug 2006

This review is from: 20th-century Glass: Over 2,000 Items, Identified, Valued (Miller's Guides) (Hardcover)
If you go round car boot sales or antiques fairs or surf on Ebay and are interested in 20th century glass you really HAVE to buy this book. The photography is wonderful and unlike most other books which concentrate on the high end stuff you never can find, Andy McConnell includes the type of thing you really will find when you are out and about. He has gone back to the factory archives too so many previously unrecorded pieces are now identified. This really is a wonderful book and who knows, you might recoup the cost of it with your first find!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on the market covering this subject, 21 Oct 2009

This review is from: 20th-century Glass: Over 2,000 Items, Identified, Valued (Miller's Guides) (Hardcover)
If you want to find out about 20th century glass, indentify where and when it was made, and get a rough guide to its value, you will be had pressed to find a better book than this.
Andy is the BBC Antiques Roadshow expert, and with a personl collection of several mthousand glasses, really knows his stuff. he also cares about the everyday glass used by our parents and grandparents, not just the magnificent pieces locked up in dusty museum cabinets to gawp at!
I have yet to find a better book on the market covering thsi subject with a wide trawl of British, Scandinavian, East European and American Glass. His appreiation of the many talented designers is evident as is the love of his subject and his enthousisam.
It deserves to be published in a paperback edition and be on the bokshelf of all glass collectors as the ieal reference book!

This review is from: 20th-century Glass: Over 2,000 Items, Identified, Valued (Miller's Guides) (Hardcover)
This book is great for a beginner or for an expert (when I bought this I fell into the former category), It is a really comprehensive look at glass in the 20th century featuring every major british and European glass manufacturer. Glass when its not signed or stamped is to say the least tricky to identify. The best way is to go out look at it and handle it but the second best way to understand it is to look in a book and this is probably the best one out there at the moment. I started to collect glasses by Alexander Hardie Williamson and this has quite a comprehensive chapter on his contribution to the british glass manufacturing and design industry. The books packed with many high quality pictures and there are hundreds of pieces identified. The prices may be a tad high for these recessionary times but even so I don't think there's a better guide out there at the moment.
