This book is certainly a surprise to read and a very interesting story. Very easy to read and like the man is talking to you in person. 2.0 out of 5 stars Just didn't like this
While its good that this book goes more in-depth then others regarding English tea history, I lost interest and didn't really like the way it was written. I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much as all the other tea history books I've read. Worth a look though if you want a more fleshed out English side of things.

This book is certainly a surprise to read and a very interesting story. Very easy to read and like the man is talking to you in person. Not a boring story and quite a revelation about the politics and the British involvement in India and China. It talks about the people and their lives on the plantations and their hardships as well as tea. It also blows aways some to the misconceptions of the origin of tea and its rise to an international drink. As it says it's history about tea and how it became the everyday drink in UK. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short & Quick, 12 Jun 2010

A surprisingly good book!

I had brought this as a novelty gift for a friend, afterwards had to purchase a 2nd copy to read myself.

It's not necessarily the history of the tea itself that's fascinating, but also the business and political side.

Definitely a great read and highly recommended!

Only about half way through so far - fascinating book - given the depreciating nature of the title, the book itself contains an implausibly vast collection of times, dates and places, all woven together with a seamless elegance.
Riveting.

Delivery and packaging were both excellent. Would use the supplier again without hesitation.

This is an excellent book and one I highly recommend.

A detailed first-hand account of the people associated with tea production rather than just a text-book history of tea itself.

What a disappointment!

This book reads more like a weekend hobby by the author than a serious look into the history of tea. It's full of anecdotes and there are plenty of facts, of course, but this is NOT a brief history of tea but rather a brief BRITISH history of tea!

Every single chapter deals with Britain's involvement in Tea, which is fair enough given their taste for it. But my goodness, to dedicate only a short, "by the way" chapter of the Chinese part of tea (most of it available on Wikipedia, "by the way"!!) and not even bothering to mention other culture's relation with tea (I'm thinking Arabs here, but Japanese would also deserve some part in this book other than the odd mention) the author clearly reveals himself as a classic product of the colonial mindset. This book would have made top reading back in the 1950's, when the Empire was hip hip hurray, but it reads as a biased, monocultural account of a plant that is shared, appreciated and engrained in so many other cultures and historical periods. 90% is British "bla-bla-bla" and my goodness, it doesn't help at all to read his own life-changing experience in Nyasaland, with some disturbing sentences (for example, the Africans don't even deserve a name, but of course the Scots, the Irish, etc do). It went straight to the recycling bin, not even worth giving to another reader.
