5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The book describes in an excellent way the country houses, their historical and social circumstances and the beautiful settings.

The pictures are utmost gorgeous and historical photographs excellent remodelled.

It describes palaces as well as brilliant designed places and their architectural and cultural background.

A must have!

3.0 out of 5 stars many black and white photo's
I do not appreciate the many black and white photo's (which are from the old archives of Country Life) and the country house descriptions are not very detailled, but it gives a nice overall impression of the Regency style in connection with English country houses

5.0 out of 5 stars scholarly text and excellent visuals, 21 Feb 2011

A treat, and highly recommended. A very superior picture book, with a typically well-researched text by the distinguished John Martin Robinson, which says a lot about social circumstances as well as architecture and design. The pictures themselves are lovely, and the selection of houses not always as expected.

I bought this book as a present for my husband, who is particularly interested in the Regency period. It is very well illustrated and is a valuable resource for anyone who would like to recreate the style and ambience of those times.

the colour shots in this book (mine is a paperback) are quite excellent. I recommend it to anyone interested in the later Georgian period - price-wise the paperback (which is substantial and not flimsy) makes it a very good buy

2.0 out of 5 stars Far too many black and white photos - no excuse, 31 July 2013

I bought this book as I am refurbishing a Victorian Workman's Club which is built to Georgian proportions and style, and so was looking for source book for design and colour. The book was highly rated and described as having beautiful photographs - I guess I should have understood duotone to mean black and white - but still seems a bit misleading.

This book was alright, but I was very dissapointed in how few color pictures were in it. Most of them were in black and white and don't show this exact style in correct light. Interesting reading though, but like I said, dissapointed in lack of color pictures.
