4.0 out of 5 stars Cornucopia
A detailed and fascinating visual survey of what's probably the most popular period in British vernacular architecture - the kind of house most of us live in. The author covers not only architectural style but all sorts of design detail, including finishes, colours combinations and even accessories like phones and garden design. It's an encyclopedia of all our yesterdays...

2.0 out of 5 stars poor illustrations
The book was full of tiny pictures that looked really interesting, but were too small to make out the detail. Very frustrating.

A detailed and fascinating visual survey of what's probably the most popular period in British vernacular architecture - the kind of house most of us live in. The author covers not only architectural style but all sorts of design detail, including finishes, colours combinations and even accessories like phones and garden design. It's an encyclopedia of all our yesterdays. Anyone who lives in a house like this and wants to maintain it with even a hint of authenticity or echo of its original splendour needs to get hold of a copy. It would be five stars except that some of the hundreds of illustrations (there are four or five on every page, some of them modern photos, others taken from catalogues and advertisements of the time) are hard to read details which have had to be blown up a little beyond their limit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about interwar houses, 12 May 2010
This review is from: The book of the Edwardian & Inter-war House (Hardcover)
The (hardback) book is a very good reference book for the Interwar houses and bungalows that still line many surburban streets. It is full to the brim with colour photographs of present day surviving interwar houses and provides the reader with useful information such as how buildings and developments started with builders following the setting up of new Administration Centres etc.,, also has numerous diagrams - for example showing how chimneys and flues work(ed)in a larger building. It could easily be used as a source of information for an older School childs' project, but I would imagine you would want to buy it just to read it and enjoy.
