5.0 out of 5 stars The Workings of WW1 Military Tactics, 12 May 2011
By
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: An Officer's Manual of the Western Front 1914-1918 (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book, for WW1 history students or those interested in miltary studies. It reveals the tactics and training for infantry officers and their men and explains how those developed as the war rolled on. Also given are diagrams and descriptions of how the military engineering of field arrangements (trenches, redoubts, artillery positions, etc.) were designed, built and maintained.

Terminology and thinking has changed in the past century but this little book really helps understand the thinking, planning and training that our grandfathers and great grandfathers gained in their service.

5.0 out of 5 stars WW1 details laid out, 7 Dec. 2013

This review is from: An Officer's Manual of the Western Front 1914-1918 (Hardcover)
A very interesting look at the requirements laid out for trench warfare, for those interested in WW1 this is a must to understand what officers had to know, and what troops had to do to maintain a 'safe' operating area in front line trenches. Nice book, illustrated and with detailed descriptions of building strong points and defences. Good value for money..!

If you are fascinated by this time period or have an interest in the military, I would definately recommend this book. It gives a compelling insight into the beuracracy behind a war that not only changed the direction of World affairs but also brought with it a modernised, mechanised style of warfare.

It's filled with tactical information on troop advancements, Advice on trench construction with indepth diagrams, troop training, artillary, Machine gun use and even a section on games to aid grenade skills.

All in all, a fascinating reference book :o)

Bought second hand but it was immaculate. The content is good and shows the development of the tactics and the employment of a junior officer in the Great War. Nice reference book or gift to a military buff.

The mind boggles at the quantity of information in this book. It has answered so many of the questions I had when I began to research the Great War for my own fictionalised account. An invaluable book for anybody interested in the details of the war, or for any author wanting an in-depth approach the subject .

This review is from: An Officer's Manual of the Western Front 1914-1918 (Hardcover)
what does a young subaltan need to know when he joins his regiment how much feed for the horses?, for the men? what kit should they have? how do you build an incinerator to keep your area clean? enquire within their is more to being an officer than simply saying follow me and marching into no mans land with your walking stick this book was designed to help them.
90 years later it shows us a world even modern soldiers find difficult to grasp

not light reading but for any student of WW1 it should be required reading.
