This review is from: Charts of War: The Maps and Charts That Have Informed and Illustrated War at Sea (Hardcover)
Charts of War, John Blake, 160pp, 2006

The Author is a retired Royal Navy officer, and gives us here a fascinating collection of maritime charts that illustrate the history of war at sea.

From the Author's Introduction:
"This book looks, within the context of war, at how, from simple beginnings, the design and content of the chart grew in sophistication (and in its variety of application) through the ages. While it does not set out to be a history of naval warfare, or of sea battles and the causes thereof, it shows how the chart can illustrate, inform and comment on maritime history. I have selected 150 charts from 15 archives in the UK, Europe and the USA that present a unique opportunity for a visual understanding and appreciation of many of the wars, campaigns and actions that occurred at sea."

Each chapter has an introduction to the maritime aspect of the subject, followed by a number of maps, charts and illustrations, such as contemporary paintings and sketches of battles and other operations.

The Contents are -
P006: Introduction
P009: The Ancient Chart
P19: The Age of Discoveries: The Renaissance Chart, 1493-1599
