Eagleton managed to make a handsome living masquerading as an intellectual, writing books which are rehashes of others' work, putting out trendy tv programmes trashing other writers (eg Larkin and Amis) for their supposed bigotry - which, as a self-confessed supporter of the world's largest homophobic hate machine, is somewhat ironic - whilst disguising his own. Being attacked by him is like receiving 'little puny squirts of weak acid', says one victim.
Here, he has teamed up with one of the star's of 'The Guardian's Face to Faith column (aka, Bigots' Corner) Giles Fraser. He variously claims to be vicar of Putney, a lecturer in philosohy at Oxford, an advisor to the ministry of defence, a cathedral dean, a charity worker, a journalist - and that's just the part of the list I remember. He is one of the more notorious faces of the Anglican church's attempt to pretend to a modernisation of the vicious drivel of Christian sexism and homophobia, whilst representing himself publicly as straight.
