4.0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read but worthwhile, 1 Nov 2013

I would not normally read this kind of book and it took discipline to get through it as it is not an easy read. However, it is certainly worthwhile and provokes thoughts that will continue to inform and encourage questioning fashionable "Certainties". The chapter on assisted suicide was excellent, regardless of whether one agreed with its conclusion or not. The whole idea of consciousness, what it is and how we understand it, as one of the great unexplored areas that will challenge philosophers and thinkers in general over this century was well argued. An excellent book.

Compelling, if complex. The brain is not the conscious spirit is the main impression given. A good riposte to materialism.
