5.0 out of 5 stars A great inspiration
I pre-ordered this book, being new to painting abstracts, and have not been disappointed. The emphasis is on creativity, inspiration and individualism. Basic information on composition, colour, texture etc is brief and succinct, and the exercises cover all aspects of "pure abstraction". These exercises are based on Ms Van Vliet's lessons and workshops, and enough...

1.0 out of 5 stars Painting 65 Abstract Exercises and its a book
Until now I have not been disappointed by any of the 'Practical Art Books' written by Dutch authors and published by Search Press. This 2010 second print was a disappointment Sixty five [65] exercises with an occasional useful page of text in between. The sort of 'paint along with Nelly' school of art education. I was hoping it would be more like say one of Jean-Paul van...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing., 11 May 2011

This review is from: Painting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and Techniques (Paperback)
I've found this book of no use at all. The examples are dull and the advice is little more than statements of the obvious. Worst of all there is no discussion at all of materials or techniques or how they can be used to carry out the exercises. Interesting results come when you know how to prepare the medium, how the medium will act as you use it and how it will respond to what you do. Plonking paint onto a canvas while thinking about energy and contrast achieves nothing - witness the examples in the book. There's got to be something better than this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Painting Abstracts, 2 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Painting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and Techniques (Paperback)
This really is a bit of a let down. The students talked about must be five year olds. Everything is geared to producing abstract work which is no more than spreading paint onto a support with either a brush or knife and hoping for the best. this is dressed up in American psycho-babble. The companion book is just a regurgitation of the same.
