Good theory but poor quality art...
on 1 October 2012
This book is very short, 60 pages and only the first 20 offer some practical advise. Chiaroscuro is explained briefly and i had hoped this book would cover a more extensive look at the technique. My main criticism is the very average artwork and shading which this book is supposed to be teaching which the great masters used. The artists complete guide to drawing the head is 160 pages of superb artwork and the opening chapter is far more extensive and inspiring regarding the technique of chiaroscuro. A below average book with a nice introduction to chiaroscuro but with artwork and shading below my own work and standard, poor cross hatching and use of outlines. Just look at the front cover and compare it with drawing the head and make up your own mind.
